What is Asphalt
Hot mix plant for road construction can produce asphalt mixture for road. What is asphalt? Asphalt is a dark brown complex mixture composed of hydrocarbons with different molecular weights and their non-metallic derivatives. As a kind of black, thick viscous organic liquid, it often exists in the form of liquid or semi-solid oil.
Asphalt is a kind of waterproof, moisture-proof and anti-corrosion organic cementitious material. And it has three types of asphalt: coal tar pitch, petroleum asphalt and natural asphalt. Among them, coal tar pitch is a by-product of coking. Petroleum asphalt is the residue of crude oil distillation.
Natural asphalt is stored underground, some of which form ore beds or accumulate on the surface of the earth’s crust.
Asphalt is mainly used in coating, plastic, rubber and other industries as well as pavement.
Hot Mix Asphalt
The hot mix asphalt refers to the asphalt mixture that the aggregates (sand, stone) in different particle sizes, binders (asphalt or residual oil) and fillers (mineral powder) are mixed according to special proportion under the 180-220 temperature.
Asphalt Pavement Road
Asphalt pavement road is one of roadways formed by paving and rolling asphalt concrete. Asphalt concrete is a mixture of asphalt material with certain viscosity and appropriate amount and mineral aggregate with certain gradation, which is fully mixed.
As a kind of asphalt pavement material, asphalt concrete has to bear the repeated action of vehicle load and the long-term influence of environmental factors. Therefore, while asphalt concrete has certain bearing capacity, it must also have good durability to resist the action of natural factors.
In other words, it shall be able to show sufficient stability under high temperature environment, crack resistance under low temperature condition, good water stability, lasting aging resistance and safety skid resistance, so as to ensure good service function of asphalt pavement.
The asphalt pavement structure layer can be composed of surface course, base course, subbase course and cushion. The asphalt structural layer of asphalt pavement itself belongs to the category of flexible pavement, but in addition to flexible materials, its base can also use rigid cement concrete or semi-rigid hydraulic materials.
The surface layer is a structural layer that directly bears the repeated action of wheel load and the influence of natural factors, and can be composed of 1~3 layers. The surface course shall be provided with anti sliding, wear-resisting, dense and stable asphalt layer according to the use requirements. The middle layer and lower layer shall be selected with appropriate asphalt structure layer according to the highway grade, asphalt layer thickness, climatic conditions, etc.
The base course is a layer set under the surface course, which together with the surface course spreads the repeated action of wheel load to the subbase, cushion and soil foundation, playing a major role in bearing the load. The strength index of base course materials shall have higher requirements.
The base course can be set with one or two layers depending on the highway grade or traffic volume. When the base course is thick and needs to be constructed in two layers, it can be respectively called upper base course and lower base course.
The subbase is a layer set under the base course, which together with the surface course and base course bears the repeated action of wheel load and plays a secondary bearing role. The strength index requirements of subbase materials can be slightly lower than that of base materials.
One or two layers of subbase can be set according to the requirements of highway grade or traffic volume. When the subbase is thick and needs to be constructed in two layers, it can be respectively called upper subbase and lower subbase.
The cushion is a structural layer set between the subbase and the soil foundation, which plays the role of drainage, water separation, antifreeze, anti-fouling, etc.

Asphalt Hot Mix Plant
The asphalt hot mix plant for road construction or hot mix asphalt plant is called the HMA for short. It is generally equal to the asphalt mix plant. The asphalt hot mix is one plant that is used for mixing the dried and heated aggregates and fillers (powders and cement) together to constitute the homogeneous mixture in the effect of asphalt at a certain temperature, which is seen a lot in these fields such as constructions of highway, urban road, grade highway, airport and port.
Hot Mix Plant with100-120tph
The hot mix plant with 100-120tph refers to the plant that the production of hot mix asphalt can reach 100t~120t per hour. Because the capacity of the hot mix plant 100-120tph lies between 100t/h~240t/h, it is categorized as medium-sized asphalt plant on the basis of production capacity.
And it is characterized by easy operation, modular design, low maintenance cost and high efficiency, it’s worth of owning.
Mini Hot Mix Plant
The mini hot mix plant for road construction refers to the small-size asphalt mixing plant. Based on the production capacity, the asphalt mixing plant is divided into: small-size, medium-size and large-size asphalt mixing plant.
The small-size asphalt mixing plant refers to the plant that the productivity is less than 80t per hour. And it has the characteristics of small module, fast installation and simple operation, and is suitable for road paving and maintenance.
How does a Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Work?
After the central control room sends the boot command, the cold materials in the cold bin are first transported to the drum dryer through the belt conveyor. Then the aggregates dried are transported to the vibrating screen for screening via the hot material elevator, and the screened aggregates fall into each hot aggregate bin.
Next The powders and screened aggregates drop into the corresponding weighing hopper from the outlet of the respective storage bins, are measured by the electronic scale, and are dropped into the mixing tank. Last the weighed hot asphalt is also sprayed into the mixing tank.
After various mixtures are fully mixed, the finished asphalt mixture is produced and it’s unloaded into the hopper car. It is unloaded into the asphalt mixture storage bin through the track, and finally the finished materials are placed on the transport vehicle through the unloading gate.
What is the difference between Hot Mix Plant and Drum Mix Plant
Drum mix plant works on similar principle as asphalt batch mix plant, but the main difference is that drum mix plant does not have tower consisting of vibrating screen, hot bin, pug mill mixer and hot aggregate elevator.
How Hot is Asphalt
When the temperature is 30 ℃ and the sun is direct, the surface temperature of the completed asphalt pavement can reach 60 ℃, which will burn your feet. If the asphalt in construction has been heated and is ready for use, it is 130 to 180 degrees.
When the asphalt concrete leaves the factory, it is 150 to 180 degrees. Before paving, the temperature of asphalt is 130 ℃ to 170 ℃. The temperature of asphalt just after rolling is 60 ℃ to 80 ℃.
Hot Mix Plant Use
The hot mix plant use can be also described as the application of the hot mix plant, which depends on the use of asphalt to the utmost extent.
In civil engineering, asphalt is a widely used waterproof and anti-corrosion material, which is mainly used in the waterproof of roof, ground and underground structures, and the anti-corrosion of wood and steel.
In road engineering, it can be mixed with mineral materials of different composition in proportion to build asphalt pavements with different structures. Therefore, the hot mix plant has been playing a significant role in road construction with different structure such as motorway, grade highway and urban road.
