19 Types of Cement for Concrete Construction

As one of the main materials for mixing the concrete , cement plays an important role for the construction project. There are19 types of cement for concrete construction, each type has different components, characteristics and applications.

1. Portland cement (P.Ⅰ/P.Ⅱ)

Portland cement refers to Portland cement clinker consisting mainly of calcium silicate and finely ground by adding an appropriate amount of gypsum.

Characteristics: Its characteristics are high early strength, high hydration heat, good freezing resistance, poor heat resistance, poor corrosion resistance, and small dry shrinkage.

Applications: It is mainly used for high performance concrete and export.

2. Ordinary Portland cement (P.O)

Ordinary Portland cement is ground of Portland cement clinker, adding an appropriate amount of gypsum and mixed materials.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of high early strength, high hydration heat, good freezing resistance, poor heat resistance, poor corrosion resistance, small dry shrinkage, good wear resistance, and good carbonization resistance.

Applications: It is mainly used in roads and Bridges, high-rise buildings, commercial concrete and national key projects.

3. Portland blast furnace slag cement (P.S)

Portland blast furnace slag cement refers to the Portland cement clinker mixed with an appropriate amount of granulated blast furnace slag and gypsum.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of low strength in the early stage, rapid growth in strength in the later stage, low hydration heat, good heat resistance, good resistance to sulfate erosion and water resistance, and poor frost resistance.

Applications: It is widely used in industry, farmland water conservancy and civil construction, especially for underwater engineering and bridge pier and other large volume concrete.

4. Portland-pozzolana cement (P.P)

Portland-pozzolana cement is made by mixing Portland cement clinker with pozzolanic material and gypsum in proportion.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of low strength in the early stage, rapid growth in strength in the later stage, low hydration heat, poor heat resistance, good resistance to sulfate erosion and water resistance, poor freezing resistance, large shrinkage, and good permeability resistance.

Applications: It is mainly used in underwater engineering and engineering with mass concrete, general industrial and civil construction projects.

5. Fly ash Portland cement (P.F)

Fly ash Portland cement is made by mixing Portland cement clinker and fly ash with an appropriate amount of gypsum.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of low strength in the early stage, high strength in the late stage, small shrinkage and strong crack resistance.

Applications: It is mainly used in mass concrete and underground engineering, general industrial and civil construction projects

6. Composite portland cement (P.C)

Composite Portland cement is a mixture of two or more materials.

Characteristics: Its characteristics are high strength in early stage, fast setting and hardening, good workability and impermeability, and the dry shrinkage rate of cement is the same as the ordinary Portland cement, and the frost resistance is slightly lower than the pure Portland cement.

Applications: It is widely used in industry, agricultural water conservancy and civil construction, can also be used in roads, underwater engineering and so on.

7. Aluminate cement (C.A)

Aluminate cement is made of alumina and limestone as raw materials, sintered or melted according to the appropriate proportion, and then ground.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of high strength in early stage, fast setting and hardening, strength decline in late stage, high temperature resistance, strong impermeability and corrosion resistance, high hydration heat, fast heat release.

Applications: It is suitable for special projects such as emergency repair of resistance to sulfuric acid attack and winter construction, as well as configuration of heat-resistant concrete, expansion cement and self-stressing cement.

8. White Portland cement (P.W)

White Portland cement is made of calcium silicate as the main component, a small amount of iron clinker and an appropriate amount of gypsum.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of high strength in the early stage, high hydration heat, good freezing resistance, poor heat resistance, poor corrosion resistance, and small dry shrinkage.

Applications: It is suitable for the interior and exterior decoration of buildings.

9. Color Portland cement

Color Portland cement is made of white Portland cement clinker and high quality white gypsum, mixed with pigment and admixture.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of high strength in the early stage, high hydration heat, good freezing resistance, poor heat resistance, poor corrosion resistance, and small dry shrinkage.

Applications: It is suitable for the interior and exterior decoration of buildings.

10. Moderate heat Portland cement (P.MH)

Moderate heat Portland cement is made of Portland cement clinker adding appropriate amount of gypsum.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of low hydration heat, low heating, good practicability and workability, strong freezing resistance and crack resistance, low alkali, low chlorine, and micro-expansion.

Applications: It can be widely used in hydraulic dam, bridge pier, high-rise floor and other large volume concrete and reservoir, swimming pool and other projects.

11. Low-heat slag Portland cement (P.SLH)

Low-heat slag Portland cement is made of appropriate Portland cement adding appropriate amount of gypsum and grinding fine.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of low hydration heat, low temperature rise, good adaptability and workability of admixtures, strong freezing resistance, crack resistance, low alkali, low chlorine, and micro-expansion.

Applications: It can be widely used in hydraulic dam, bridge pier, high-rise floor and other large volume concrete and reservoir, swimming pool and other projects.

12. Rapid hardening Portland cement

Rapid hardening Portland cement is made of Portland cement clinker with an appropriate amount of gypsum.

Characteristics: It has characteristic of  strength develops quickly in the early stage, and the strength continues to increase in the late stage.

Applications: It is suitable for emergency repair projects, low temperature construction projects and high grade concrete prefabricated parts.

13. Sulfate resistant Portland cement

Sulfate resistant Portland cement is made of Portland cement clinker, adding an appropriate amount of gypsum and grinding fine.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of sulfate resistance, low hydration heat, strong impermeability, good aadaptability, workability and durabilityd of mixture.

Applications: It is suitable for harbor universal wharf, coastal breakwater, underground and underwater engineering containing sulfate ion, underground engineering of tunnel located in gypsum mine and glauberite mine.

14. Self stressing sulphoaluminate cement (S.SAC)

The main components of self stressing sulphoaluminate cement are anhydrous calcium sulfoaluminate, dicalcium silicate and gypsum.

Characteristics: Its characteristics are early strength, high strength, high impermeability, high freeze resistance, corrosion resistance and low alkaline.

Applications: It is used in construction engineering, emergency repair, seepage prevention engineering, cement products, cement pressure pipes and various GRC products.

15. Self-stressing ferro-sulphoaluminate cement

Self-stressing ferro-sulphoaluminate cement is composed of anhydrous calcium sulfoaluminate, ferric phase, dicalcium silicate and gypsum.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of small free expansion rate, high self-stress value, high impermeability, and corrosion resistance.

Applications: It is used in construction engineering, emergency repair, seepage prevention engineering, cement products, cement pressure pipes and various GRC products.

16. Low heat expansive cement (LHEC)

Low heat expansive cement is made of granulated blast furnace slag, appropriate amount of Portland cement clinker and gypsum.

Characteristics: Its characteristics are low hydration heat, corrosion resistance, folding resistance, frost resistance, durability, crack resistance, good heat resistance.

Applications: It is suitable for hydraulic DAMS, Bridges and other large volume concrete projects.

17. Building cement

Building cement is composed of one or more mixed materials, Portland cement clinker and gypsum.

Characteristics: It is characterized by low strength and good workability.

Applications: It is suitable for masonry and plastering mortar, cushion concrete, etc.

18. Low thermal slag Portland cement with slightly expanded retardation (P . SELH)

Low thermal slag Portland cement with slightly expanded retardation is made of Portland cement clinker mixed with an appropriate amount of granulated blast furnace slag and gypsum. Magnesium oxide has the effect of retarding expansion, which can improve the strength, impermeability and durability of concrete.

Applications: It is suitable for large volume concrete engineering, treatment of new and old concrete combined engineering and underground waterproof, impermeability and corrosion resistance engineering.

19. high-alumina cement

high-alumina cement refers to the clinker with bauxite and limestone as raw materials, calcium aluminate and alumina content of about 50%.

Characteristics: It has characteristics of fast setting and strength in the early state, large hydration heat and heat concentration, strong sulfate resistance, good heat resistance.

Applications: It is suitable for emergency military engineering (road construction, bridge), emergency repair engineering (leakage plugging, etc.), temporary engineering, and preparation of heat-resistant concrete (such as high-temperature furnace lining, etc.).
