Tow Behind Concrete Pumps

What is the Tow Behind Concrete Pump?

Tow behind concrete pumps, also known as trailer concrete pumps, are a common sight in modern construction sites because of their convenience of mobility from one site to another as well as their small size and lightweight nature.

As the name suggests, tow behind concrete pump is a concrete pump that is mounted on a chassis that can be towed to the operation site by a tractor.

The chassis is usually a single or multi-axle trailer and is equipped with a concrete pressure pump used to pour concrete. These are also known as stationary, line, static, or towable concrete pumps as they need a suitable vehicle to tow the pumping equipment.

Why Use a Tow Behind Concrete Pump?

After the cement tank truck reaches the project operation site, manual loading of concrete is cumbersome and delays the transportation of concrete. This disadvantage of the inflexibility of the cement tanker can be resolved by the tow behind concrete pumps.

The small trailer pump is highly flexible with the ability to add and remove pipelines as required and is capable of both vertical transportation and horizontal transportation of concrete.

The use of pipelines enables the concrete to reach areas where other trucks cannot reach and reduce labor expenses and save time.

Tow Behind Concrete Pumps Applications

Tunnel works – Since these pumps are towed and stationary at the worksite, they can be placed at a suitable location and concrete can be pumped from outside the tunnel using pipelines. This saves not only space but also a lot of time and energy.

Residential projects – They are ideal for residential projects because of their compact size and design. Concrete can be pumped from a distance giving more flexibility and can cover a good distance as required.

High rise projects – Tow behind concrete pumps are equipped with powerful pumps that can reach great heights with the use of adjustable pipelines.

Tow behind concrete pumps are also used for grouting construction, indoor and outdoor pouring operations, interior wall pouring, floor pouring, and high-altitude operations.

Advantages of Tow Behind Concrete Pump

  1. One of the main advantages of the pump is its flexibility in the pipeline accessories. These pipelines can be extended, reduced, and can also be turned as required. Challenges to pouring concrete at great heights, depths, and remote areas can be overcome with the help of tow behind concrete pumps.
  2. They can be easily transported from one site to another by installing them on a vehicle and it requires minimal setup and smooth transportation of concrete. Once the pipelines are installed and you start the pumps, it will make the project completion easier and safer.
  3. Trailer-mounted concrete pumps have a higher capacity than other larger counterparts such as the concrete mixer pump or mobile concrete pumps.
  4. Labor cost is reduced as it eliminates the need for manually transporting concrete and manpower is required only to handle pipelines, thereby reducing the number of people on the job site and fewer chances of workplace accidents.
  5. Construction projects can be complex and could easily go off schedule, incurring not just delays but increased expenses. As time is valuable, working with concrete pumps makes the job faster and helps ensure the project is realized without falling behind schedule and going off-budget.
  6. Tow behind concrete pumps are very useful for concreting in tunnel projects, bridge structures, residential projects, and power stations where it is not possible for other types of concrete pumps to reach.

How Does the Tow Behind the Concrete Pump Work?

In simple terms, the concrete truck discharges concrete into the hopper of the tow behind concrete pumps.

The liquid concrete is churned by the auger and gets sucked into the valve system in small intervals or strokes and pushed through the concrete pipe attached to the trailer and pumped to the pouring destination.

From a more technical perspective, hydraulic cylinders and electrical systems are used for operating the concrete pump, which pours the wet concrete to the desired location.

The piston of the concrete pump is linked with the piston rod of the main oil cylinder. With the movement of the hydraulic oil in the main oil cylinder, the pistons move synchronously, with one cylinder moving forward and the other cylinder moving back.

The outlet of the distributing valve is connected with the outlet. A spline shaft connects the other end with the swinging arm that can swing left or right under the action of the swinging oil cylinder.

When the concrete material is pumped the concrete piston advances and retreats with the action of the main cylinder.

Simultaneously, under the action of the swinging cylinder, the distribution valve gets connected with the concrete cylinder and the concrete cylinder gets connected to the hopper.

In this way, when the concrete piston moves backward, the concrete in the hopper gets sucked into the concrete cylinder, and when the concrete piston moves forward. The concrete cylinder then sends the material into the distribution valve pump.

When the concrete piston retreats to the end of the stroke, it triggers a reversing device in the water tank. Once again, the main oil cylinder is reversed to start the continuous pumping process.

The main oil cylinder changes direction and simultaneously swings the oil cylinder to change direction. Once again the distribution valve connects with the concrete cylinder and the concrete cylinder outlet connects with the hopper.

With this process, continuous pumping is achieved as the piston retreats and goes forward constantly.

When the reverse pumping starts, the concrete cylinder on the suction stroke is connected with the distributing valve and on the push stroke, the concrete cylinder is connected with the hopper, thereby drawing the concrete in the pipeline back to the hopper.

The key component of the concrete pump is the distribution valve, and the type of distribution valve used will directly impact the performance of the concrete pump.

How do You Transport a Towable Concrete Pump?

Since these concrete pumps are mounted on trailers, they can be easily transported to any job site using a tractor or a suitable vehicle.

Trailer mounted pumps are generally small in size are can be towed by a standard pickup truck. However, one needs to ensure that the vehicle should be powerful enough to pull the tow behind concrete pump.

The specification sheets for a pump will give the dimensions of the equipment as well as the towing weights.

For towing safety and convenience, it is always advisable to look for a pump that is mounted on a highway-rated trailer.

The highway-rated trailers are equipped with features such as an adjustable-height hitch, hydraulic surge brakes, durable fenders, stop/directional tail lights, and a heavy-duty frame with torsion bar suspension, making it safe during transport.

Purchase or Rent a Trailer Concrete Pump – Which is More Economical?

Renting or buying a trailer pump depends essentially on the requirement of the user and the budget. At the same time, you should consider the kind of trailer that is needed for the kind of job to be performed.

One of the main challenges in the field of construction is to pour concrete as close to the destination without any disruption to save transportation time and increase productivity.

This can be achieved by deploying concrete pump equipment as it saves the expense of transportation and manpower as well as it saves a lot of time.

Due to this many big constructors would prefer to purchase a tow behind concrete pump as it is an asset that can be used in their multiple projects.

On the other hand, homeowners would prefer to rent the tow behind concrete pumps for finishing their job and not bothering about keeping the equipment and maintenance.

There are various types of pumps to choose from based on the job requirement such as, whether you need high volume or low volume output, based on which the costs vary.

However, there are some factors to be considered before buying or renting a concrete pump, such as –

  • What is the purpose and how often will you use the tow behind concrete pumps?
  • Should you invest in a new or a used concrete pump?
  • What is the cost of maintaining the equipment?
  • What is the cost of training the operator of the concrete pump?
  • What is the future plan for using the equipment?
  • What is the return on your investment?
